The National Hockey League (NHL) is as intense and entertaining as competitive sports gets. There are a total of 1,271 games played out over seven months. This naturally draws a lot of betting fans. Handicappers enjoy exciting NHL odds for all kinds of bets, from money line and puck line to totals, futures, parlays, and props.
What do NHL odds look like?
NHL odds are quite easy to read. Depending on the sign, they tell the bettor whether the team is the underdog or the favorite to win a match. The favorite will have positive (+) NHL odds, while the underdog has negative (-) ones.
The most common types of NHL betting odds are money line, puck line, and totals odds.
Moneyline
These NHL betting lines are used for wagers on who will win the game. They show how much money you’ll win from a $100 bet (for the underdog) or how much money you need to wager to win $100 (for the favorite). To do this, moneyline odds are typically based on $100.
Take a hypothetical match between Boston Bruins and the Calgary Flames. A sportsbook may present the following moneyline odds;
Boston Bruins
+130
Calgary Flames
-120
Being the underdogs, the Boston Bruins will win you $130 if you wager $100 on their victory. On the other hand, the Calgary Flames are the favorites. You’ll need a $120 wager to win $100 from their victory.
Puck line (Canadian Line)
The puck line is what you would call a goal spread in other sports. This is a wager on the goal differential between two teams at the end of a hockey game. Puck line NHL odds are designed to spread the risk by handicapping the favorite. So, you can still back the underdog and win even if they lose.
Here is an example of puck line odds on an NHL odds page;
Boston Bruins
+1.5
Calgary Flames
-1.5
The Boston Bruins must win the game or lose by less than 1.5 goals to cover the spread. You lose your bet if you back them and they lose by two goals or more. On the other hand, the Calgary Flames must win the game by more than 1.5 goals to cover the spread. You lose your wager if you back them and they lose the game or fail to win it by two or more goals.
Total Score Or OVER/UNDER
Total bets don’t require you to back any particular team. Rather, the sportsbook selects a line and you wager on whether the total goals from both teams will exceed the line. Over means you believe that the score will exceed while under shows that you believe it won’t.
Over 5.5
-110
Under 5.5
+110
Here, the most likely outcome is represented by negative odds while the least likely one has positive ones.
Are there other odds on NHL games?
Yes. While puck line, totals, and money line odds are the most popular NHL lines, you also get props, futures, and parlay NHL odds
NHL Props
NHL prop bets are wagers on seemingly random events during a hockey game. They are a big feature of NHL las vegas odds. For instance, you get odds on which player will score the first goal, make the most fouls, or score the winning games. Parlay odds are all about exploring the fun side of NHL games.
NHL Futures
Futures odds represent wagers on upcoming events in the NHL calendar. It might be a bet on which team will win the Stanley Cup, which player will carry the NHL MVP award, and so on. These sportsbook odds typically have the most attractive winnings. To get the best odds, bet at the start of the NHL season.
NHL Parlays
Parlays odds result from stacking more than two wagers in a single bet slip. For instance, you can bet on the outcome of multiple games or stack several futures into one bet. The resulting NHL odds from parlay bets are as attractive as it gets. They might even win you well over ten times your initial bet account.
Betting on NHL Futures
NHL events offer some of the most exciting future odds in the market. If you’re looking to multiply your wager amount tenfold, here are the top NHL events to look out for.
Stanley Cup
The Stanley Cup goes to the NHL champion at the end of the season. To get there, qualified teams compete in the playoffs where the games are extra competitive. NHL odds for the Stanley Cup playoffs typically promise huge winnings, and if you can predict the winner, there’s lots of money to be made.
NHL Draft
The NHL draft usually takes place in July, but odds are available from early on. For the best odds, start wagering before the draft begins.
Hart Memorial trophy
The Hart Memorial Trophy is awarded to the best player in the National Hockey League. It is an annual award, and thus, odds are available from as early as the beginning of the season. The earlier you make your Hart Memorial future bet, the better the odds you’ll get.
Expert Picks
NHL expert picks are an opportunity to make well-informed betting decisions. Betting experts tend to analyze the day’s NHL games and events and make selections based on relevant statistics and the best odds. They then sell/ giveaway these selections to their fans, giving them a better chance of winning big.
