In football, as with other sports, there are many factors that can alter how a team performs. One of the most influential of these is where the match takes place, with the general assumption that playing at home in your own familiar stadium while surrounded by hordes of your own fans will lead to a more confident and better-performing team.
This belief in the benefits of playing at home is so engrained in our understanding of football, and sport in general, that all major football leagues in the UK see each team playing both a home game and an away game with every other team, thereby eliminating the advantage.
However, does this advantage really exist? And if it does, how much of a difference does it actually make to the outcome of a game? With these questions in mind, we here at Betsperts have conducted a small investigation into the performance of Premier League teams in both home and away games during the 2021/22 season.
By comparing matches won, drawn and lost at home and away games, as well as the contrast in goal difference, we will identify the teams that perform best at their home stadiums, and those more likely to flourish on away days.

Liverpool
Liverpool earned the highest number of points from home games in the 2021/22 Premier League season with a total of 49. Having placed second overall in the league and not losing a single home game, coming to Anfield is a daunting prospect for any team.

What Premier League team had the most points from away games?
Manchester City
Manchester City is the team that received the most points from away games with an impressive total of 46. Despite having 14 wins and 4 draws at away games, Man City were unable to finish the season unbeaten on the road, being bested by Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the opening game of their 2021/22 campaign.

What Premier League team home or away gets the best results?
Here we can see which teams had more points when playing at home and those who performed better on away days.
Of the 20 clubs in the league, only 5 had a better points record from their away games, suggesting that the home advantage is a real and influential factor when determining the outcome of a football match. This is also supported by the total number of points scored by all teams during home games being far higher than what they received from away games, with a difference of 102.
What Premier League team has the best home-field advantage?
Everton
Everton are the team that benefits the most from playing at home, receiving 19 more points from games played at home at Goodison Park. This is followed by Leicester City, who earned 16 more points at home, and then Arsenal, whose home performances earned them 13 more points than their away games.

The teams that seemingly perform better on away days are Brighton & Hove Albion, Chelsea, Leeds United, Watford, and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Of these teams, Watford and Brighton & Hove Albion seem to perform the best when playing away compared to at home, with both teams receiving 7 more points from their away days.

What Premier League team performs best for home goal difference?
Manchester City
Manchester City had the best home goal difference in the 2021/22 Premier League season, scoring 43 more goals during home games than they conceded. This is followed by Liverpool, echoing the final league table, who had a home goal difference of 40.

What Premier League teams performs best for away goal difference?
Manchester City
In addition to having the best home game goal difference, Manchester City also had the best goal difference at away games, scoring 30 more goals than they conceded. Again Liverpool place second but this time tied with Chelsea, with both teams recording an away goal difference of 28.
However, the majority of other teams recorded a negative goal difference from their away performances, with only 6 teams scoring more goals away than they conceded. This indicates that teams generally find it much more difficult to score when playing in an unfamiliar setting without the support of their fans.

Here we can see which teams had a better goal difference from home and away games. With the addition of Norwich City, the same teams that received more points from away games also experienced better goal differences when not playing at home.
Everton
Everton have the biggest home goal advantage in the Premier League, with their home goal difference being 27 higher than their away goal difference, making them a formidable side to face on their home turf. This is closely followed by Arsenal who claimed second place with a home goal advantage of 23, and Southampton who placed third with a home goal advantage of 22.

What Premier League team has a better away goal advantage?
Watford
Watford has the best away goal advantage, with their away goal difference being 15 higher than their home goal difference. However, this is in spite of Watford having a negative goal difference both at home and away.
Chelsea claims second place with an away goal advantage of 13, while Brighton & Hove Albion claimed third with an away goal advantage of 6.

Methodology
We wanted to find out which Premier League teams perform best at home and away. To do this, we used data from FBREF to record the number of wins, draws and losses that each team had at home and away in the 2021/22 season.
We then calculated the number of points that would have been earned for each team at home and away, and ranked them accordingly. This also allowed us to identify teams that had a better performance in away games than at home, subverting expectations.
We also collected data for the number of goals scored and conceded at home and away games, using it to see which teams recorded a better goal difference at home or away.
