MLB Best Bets: Baseball Picks for August 23rd

Just like what baseball players fall into sometimes, we’re in a bit of a slump. Max Scherzer was just ok for the Mets last night, and while his “ok” is most pitchers’ good, he wasn’t good enough to cover our 1st Half bet vs the Yankees. As for the White Sox/Royals 1st 3 under 2.5, I mean, it just can’t get any dumber. Tony La Russa started a very clearly injured Michael Kopech who couldn’t really do anything at all early and the Royals were easily able to capitalize with a 4-run 1st Inning. I think I’m officially done betting the White Sox as long as Tony La Russa is running things, because even if the logic and reason are there for a bet, he can find a way to mess things up. But we’re on to today. Some day baseball and a full slate of games. Back on BetMGM for my odds today, sign up with them below and get a risk-free bet up to $1,000. Onto the bets.

Cardinals 1st Half -1.5 (+130) vs Cubs (Game 1)

The Cardinals and Cubs go at it in a doubleheader today at Wrigley Field with the Cardinals having the significant advantage on the mound in Game 1 of the twin billing. Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright (he’s been that for seemingly 20 years now) toes the rubber in the afternoon matchup against Cubs rookie call-up Javier Assad. Assad has been solid across a couple levels of minor league ball this season, but he’s been a little prone to the walk. If he struggles at all with his command today, the 1st place Cardinals should find themselves with an early lead especially with Wainwright on the mound. At the +130 I like taking a chance on the ace vs the minor leaguer.

Mets vs Yankees Over 8.5 (-118)

So the 1st 5 under didn’t work last night but I’m going to go a different route in this one. It’s a pitching matchup that looks toward the over in my opinion. Frankie Montas has been BAD for the Yankees in 3 starts since being acquired by Oakland. Montas has allowed 14 ER across 14.0 IP in 3 starts as a Yankee. Taijuan Walker has been find for the Mets this season, but left his last start vs the Braves early and outside of that has been just ok in his previous 4 starts having allowed 16 ER in 18.2 IP (one of those starts being 8 ER vs the Braves). The Yankees offense seems to bet coming close to snapping out of their slump and the Mets bats have been producing all year. Plus, overs in Yankee stadium are never dead with the short porch. Let’s take a shot on some fireworks in the Subway Series.
