MLB Best Bets: Baseball Picks for August 18th

Well, what usually happens when you get greedy is you lose. That’s what happened when I tried adding the White Sox 1st Half result yesterday. Didn’t need to do it, swung for the fences and struck out. Still ended up with a 1-2 day yesterday, so not all bad. Was pretty stunned at the Reds 1-0 win over Philly, but that’s baseball. The Sox had a chance to cash their 1st Half result, they had base loaded with nobody out in the 4th down 3-1. Framber Valdez had lost his control a bit allowing 2 hits and 2 walks to start the inning. Josh Harrison then swung first pitch and grounded into a double play limiting the Sox damage to just a run. The Mets & Max Scherzer were never a doubt in their 1st Half cruising with a 4-1 lead into the 6th inning. Back on BetMGM for my bets today. Dodgers vs Brewers 1st Half Under 3.5 (+102)

I like the value on this one given the pitching matchup and how these games have gone so far. 2 of the 3 games in this matchup have gone under 3.5 for the 1st 5 innings. Corbin Burnes throws for Milwaukee and he’s been fantastic again this season with a 2.39 ERA and 0.92 WHIP through 143.0 IP. In his last two starts he’s allowed just 1 ER in each of them. Andrew Heaney throws for the Dodgers, and while he’s only thrown 31.0 innings this season he’s been really good in limited action. He’s got a 1.16 ERA and 1.00 WHIP in 31.0 IP. He’s probably not going to throw much more than 3 or 4 innings, but if he’s good through those like he has been in his last 3 starts we should be good.

Mets vs Braves 1st Half Under 3.5 (-114)

I’m a little concerned as to why these odds aren’t juiced a little more, but I’m still going to take it. We have two aces on the mound in Jacob DeGrom and Max Fried. Fried’s last start was against the Mets and he went 6.0 IP allowing just 2 ER. Fried has recorded a quality start in 8 of his last 9 outings. DeGrom is just getting his season started with just 3 starts, but he’s been really good. He’s got 22 strikeouts over 11.2 IP in his last two starts. Both of these pitchers know these lineups well, both pitchers are throwing really well, let’s take another 1st Half under.
